Administrative / biographical background:

The Planning Policy, Minerals and New Towns Directorate was created in late 1981 and comprised five divisions:

  • Planning Policy Research and Analysis Division PPMNT 1 (for a very short time the international work of PPMNT 1 formed a separate division, PPMNT 1a);
  • Minerals Planning Division PPMNT 2;
  • Cartographic Services PPMNT 3;
  • New Towns Divisions 1 and 2 PPMNT 4 PPMNT 5.

The Planning Policy Research and Analysis Division was partly a continuation of the former Planning Intelligence Division (AT 79). Its functions were co-ordination of planning research, analysis and information and policy on Departmental relations with the voluntary sector. The division performed work on the voluntary sector itself. In terms of planning research it funnelled research proposals from the Planning Land Use Policy (PLUP - AT 29), Development Plans and Regional Policy (DPRP - AT 36) and Inner Cities (ICD - AT 81) divisions through itself exercising a degree of control over what was submitted to the Directorate General of Research (DGR - AT 82).
