Administrative / biographical background:

The Planning Intelligence Division was set up in 1972 as part of the re-organisation of Planning Branches consequent on the creation of the Department of the Environment. The Director of Planning Intelligence also performed the duties of the head of the Planning profession. Planning Intelligence had two main responsibilities: internal liaison and planning research. With regard to the latter, the division's responsibility was to 'facilitate the definition of customers needs' and to apply research findings to planning practise. A small unit existed to support the Director in these endeavours, but the majority of the work was performed in the Planning Divisions and co-ordinated by the Director General of Research. In 1978 the Division became part of the Minerals Division where it continued with its own file series until 1981 when the phrase 'Planning Intelligence' disappeared from the Department.
