Administrative / biographical background:

The Directorate General of Research (DGR) was created by Departmental Notice 14/71. The existing research establishments the Road Research Laboratory (Ministry of Transport) and the Building Research Station (Ministry of Public Buildings and Works) were placed under the DGR as were four research establishments transferred in from the Ministry of Technology (The Water Pollution Research Station, the Hydraulics Research Station, the Forest Products Research Laboratory and the Fire Research Station). A Directorate of Research Requirements was created at the same time to superintend research work carried out within the Department. The Directorate was listed in the Departmental directory from 1971 to 1976 when research work appears to have been split amongst the divisions on a functional basis.
