Details of SC 8/261/13013
Reference: SC 8/261/13013
Description:
Petitioners: Abbot of Westminster.
Addressees: King and council.
Occupation: Abbot of Westminster
Nature of request: The Abbot of Westminster states that the King's progenitors granted to the Abbots of Westminster a tithe of the rent of Droitwich in Worcestershire, and that his predecessors were seized of this until Edward I granted the vill in dower to Margaret, his Queen, who did not pay it. After her death, Edward II in his eleventh year granted the manor to Isabella, his Queen, who did not pay the tithe either. Then Edward II gave it to his brother, Edmund Earl of Kent, and to the heirs of his body, making no mention of this tithe. The Abbot petitioned Edward II in the last parliament, and a writ was sent to the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer to inform the King of the Abbot's right, and they have sent information on his estate in this tithe. He asks that he might receive the tithe as his predecessors did, and that the arrears might be paid or allowed against his debt in the Exchequer.
