Details of SC 8/77/3842
Reference: SC 8/77/3842
Description:
Petitioners: Abbot and convent of Westminster.
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: The Abbot and convent of Westminster request payment of an annual tithe of £8 from the vill of Droitwich, Worcestershire, which the Countess of Kent is refusing to pay, as they are not specified in the charter she has for the fee farm of the vill, although it appears from the records of the Exchequer that this tithe is owed to them. A copy of a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer on this matter, in response to a previous petition, is attached to this petition.
Nature of endorsement: The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered, by a writ containing the substance of the matter, that, when they have examined the charter that the Abbot claims to have for the tithe, if they find by inspection of it that the tithe is due to them, and when they have examined the remembrances of the Exchequer, if they find that the abbots of the same place received the said £8 for the same tithe, as is claimed, and when they have had consideration for the assignment made to the Countess, they are to order the Countess to pay the said £8 to the Abbot for the entire rent, allowing the Countess as much as she will pay the Abbot in this way, and making allowance in the debts the Abbot owes the King for what is in arrears of the said £8 for the time when the entire rent was in the King's hand.
Places mentioned: Droitwich, Worcestershire; Westminster.
People mentioned: [Margaret of Woodstock], Countess of Kent.
Note: CCR 1327-30 pp.57-58 is dated 13 March 1327, and would appear to be in response to the previous petition mentioned here, as would Cal. Mem. Rolls 1326-7 no.536, dated 7 March 1327. As this petition mentions the Countess of Kent, it would appear to date from after Edmund of Woodstock's death in March 1330.
Date: [c. 1330]
