History: | The Countryside Agency, an executive agency of DEFRA, was set up in April 1999 by merger of the Countryside Commission with parts of the Rural Development Commission. Its remit was to conserve and enhance the English countryside, to spread social and economic opportunity for those who live and work in rural areas, and to promote the use of the countryside by all. Following the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 part of the Countryside Agency merged with English Nature and parts of the Rural Development Service to form Natural England. The remaining part of the Countryside Agency became the Commission for Rural Communities. |
