Folios 15-16. Letter from James Lewis, Pendoylan House, Cardiff, to Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] expressing concern that Mr Fothergill, his predecessor as Churchwarden of the parish of Pendoylan, a wealthy landowner, may have inadvertently misappropriated a charitable fund set up for the poor of the parish by Jack Talbot and Phillip John Late. This legacy, date unknown, consisted of £50 from each man, the interest to be given annually to the poor of the parish. Fothergill had always excluded those in receipt of parish relief, although no evidence as to the legality of this action was included on 'the tablet' [commemorative tablet in the church]. Paper Number: 4198/B/1847. Poor Law Union Number 613. Counties: Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire.
