Description:
Petitioners: Community of Longstow hundred in Cambridgeshire.
Addressees: Chancellor.
Nature of request: The community of Longstow hundred state that Richard de Welleford, draper and citizen of London, and others of his company, have claimed in Chancery that they were robbed in the said hundred, and that although they raised the hue and cry the people of the hundred did not want to help them to pursue the matter. They had a writ to the Sheriff to hold an inquisition, but this was procured by the merchants and defective - as they are prepared to prove - and on this inquisition they aim to recover the value of their goods from the people of the hundred, according to the statute of Winchester. The people of Longstow hundred claim that the carter and other men of the merchants were in collusion with the robbers, intending to throw the blame on the people of the country, and that they abandoned their cart voluntarily to be robbed, pretending that it was broken, and never raised the hue and cry; and also state that the keepers of the peace in Cambridgeshire investigated the matter immediately, and that several people were indicted, of whom two were seized and imprisoned at Cambridge, and another seized and hanged. They ask that the execution of the statute of Winchester on behalf of the merchants might be halted, and that there might be a commission to inquire into whether people have been indicted and imprisoned or hanged for this or not, and into whether they or the merchants are telling the truth; and that justice might be done to the parties.
