Description:
Petitioners: ? No Petitioner named
Nature of request: Writ from Edward III to the Mayor and Bailiffs of Cambridge, asking them to provide information on any persons in prison at Cambridge for the robbery of Richard de Welford and Geoffrey de Weston, merchants of London, on the King's highway at a place called Potterescrouch between Arrington and Caxton.
Nature of endorsement: The response of Eudo de Helpringham, Mayor of Cambridge, and Gerard atte Grene and John Andreu, Bailiffs of the same town. There is no thief captured or in prison in the King's prison in Cambridge for any robbery committed against Richard de Welford and Geoffrey de Weston, merchants of London, on the King's highway at a place called Potterescrouch between Arrington and Caxton in Longstow hundred; but a certain Ralph le Thresher and William son of Robert in Angulo de Herdwyk were captured by us at Barnwell within the liberty of the town of Cambridge on suspicion of theft and harbouring of thieves: for which they are retted and still held in the same prison. And after the endorsement of this writ, namely on the Wednesday on the eve of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, there came to us an order from the Keepers of the Peace, through the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, to take the aforesaid thieves, as can be seen in the schedule sewn to this.
Places mentioned: Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire]; London; Potterescrouch [unidentified], [Cambridgeshire]; Arrington, [Cambridgeshire]; Caxton, [Cambridgeshire]; Longstow hundred, Cambridgeshire; York; Hardwick, [Cambridgeshire]; Barnwell, [Cambridgeshire].

Note: Writ dated 5 August 2 Edward III (1328). 'Potterescrouch' is probably either a local name for part of Ermine Street, or a junction on that street, possibly with a Potter's or Porter's Way, common road names in this area.
