Details of SC 8/246/12274
Reference: SC 8/246/12274
Description:
Petitioners: William Bateman, Bishop of Norwich.
Name(s): Bateman, William
Addressees: King.
Occupation: Bishop of Norwich
Nature of request: [Petition in 2 parts:]1) Bateman requests that the record and process in two suits wherein judgment was made against the bishop be brought before the triers in parliament and if errors are found redress be made to him.2) He requests that he be restored to the liberties of view of Frankpledge and hustings in Lynn which was wrongly seized into the king's hand following an inquisition taken before Thorpe.1)
Nature of endorsement: The record and process should be brought into parliament to be examined for errors, and if there be any let them be redressed.2) The inquisition should be brought before the council in parliament.
Places mentioned: Bishop's Lynn (King's Lynn), [Norfolk].
People mentioned: Richard Froisell; Abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds; William de Thorp (Thorpe).
Note: The petition dates to 1346 as the bishop was called to discuss the matter of the liberties of Lynn in a council decision of that year (C 49/7/21). The second part of the petition appears to be resolved by a grant in the patent rolls of 16 May 1350, where as the first matter seems to have been a more prolonged matter (CPR 1348-50, p.551; CPR 1350-4, p.100).
Date: [1346]
