Details of SC 8/239/11921
Reference: SC 8/239/11921
Description:
Petitioners: William Bateman, Bishop of Norwich.
Name(s): Bateman, William
Addressees: King and council.
Occupation: Bishop of Norwich
Nature of request: William, Bishop of Norwich, states that he and his predecessors were seized of view of frankpledge and a husting in the town of Bishop's Lynn, but that because of a false suggestion made by certain people of Lynn that John de Ely, his predecessor, acquired these from the mayor and community of Lynn without permission from the King, a commission was issued to inquire into this, which was held on St Laurence's day last in circumstances which were prejudicial to the Bishop in various ways. As a result of this inquiry, the liberties were taken into the King's hand, and delivered to the people of Lynn. He asks that they might be restored to him, and he will be ready to answer to the King and to show his right when it pleases the King.
Nature of endorsement: If the Bishop's franchises have been taken into the King's hand by virtue of such a commission and inquisition as the petition says, and not for any other reason, because it is against the law of the land that a person should be expelled from possession of his franchises without response, the Bishop is to have restitution of these franchises, saving the King's right; provided always that the said Bishop answers to the King for the aforesaid franchises in the place where he should, according to the law.
Places mentioned: King's Lynn, [Norfolk].
People mentioned: John de Ely (Salmon), Bishop of Norwich; Mayor and community of Lynn; Edward [II], King of England; William Basset; William de Thorp.
Note: CPR 1348-50 p.551 is dated 16 May 1350 and is clearly the result of this petition.C 49/7/21 is dated 20 Edward III (25 January 1346-24 January 1347).
