History: | The Department of Social Security (DSS) was created in 1988 when the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) was divided into two departments. DSS had overall responsibility for the payment of benefits and for the collection of contributions under the National Insurance scheme. In 2001, many of the department's responsibilities passed to the newly created Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). |
