Administrative / biographical background:

In the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) statistical research was conducted by the Statistics and Research Division. When the DHSS was split into the Department of Health (DoH) and Department of Social Security (DSS) in 1988 this function continued in the Common Services Group for a further year. Once established in the DSS the function was retitled as the Analytical Services Division (ASD). Its work included computing and operational research as well as statistics related to benefits.

In 2001 the division transferred to the newly created Department for Work and Pensions.
