Reference: SC 8/177/8829
Description:
Petitioners: Commonalty of Bromfield and Yale.
Addressees: John, Earl of Warenne.
Nature of request: The commonalty request the earl of Warenne's council and aid as the earl of Lancaster threatens them and has made it known that he wants possession of the lordships by one means or another. They are not able to resist such power, but are willing to maintain the earl's honour if he gave them good leadership. They also suggest that the earl request that the king order the justices of Wales and Chester to give them aid.
Nature of endorsement: [None].
Places mentioned: Bromfield, [Denbighshire, Wales]; Yale, [Denbighshire, Wales].
People mentioned: John [de Warenne], earl of Warenne; [Thomas of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster.
Note: The petition dates to 1318 as the earl of Lancaster was ordered not to attempt anything against the king's peace in the lands on 16 June 1318, and by 1 January 1319 the earl of Lancaster received a licence to hold the lands for life (CCR 1313-18, p.554; CPR 1317-21, pp.263-4).
Date: [1318]
