The answer, in the terminology of the ecclesiastical courts, was the response made by the opposing party to the plaintiff's pleas known as the allegation. Answers could be taken personally under the auspices of the respondent's proctor, and produced and repeated before a surrogate in chambers, with a notary public as witness. Personal answers could be decreed by the Court. Various replicatory allegations and answers might be subsequently made by both sides. |
