Administrative / biographical background:

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is one of the specialised agencies set up by member governments under the aegis of the United Nations. It was inaugurated in 1945 in Washington. Until 1965, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food liaised directly with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. Thereafter, responsibility for co-ordinating the United Kingdom's work with the FAO was transferred to the Ministry of Overseas Development.
