Administrative / biographical background:

The Pilgrims' Lodge Almshouses were founded and endowed by James Child of Hackney in 1863. They were situated in Lyme Grove, St Thomas' Square, Hackney and provided homes for up to twelve Christian women aged at least 60. The almshouses were modernised in 1958. In 1964 they were described as Pilgrims Lodge, Hackney, with single rooms for twelve women, with a resident matron. Applicants had to be aged at least 60 and be a member of a Christian church. Adjoining properties, nos 32-36 Brenthouse Road, were owned by the Trust and let to tenants to provide and income for the charity.
