Reference: SC 8/291/14520
Description:
Petitioners: Arnold William (Arnaut Guilhem) de Marsan, son of Arnold de Gavastun, late knight of Gascony.
Name(s): de Marsan, Arnold William (Arnaut Guilhem)
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: Arnold William de Marsan, son of Arnold de Gavastun, late knight of Gascony, makes three requests:1) He states that the king owes his father, who died in the king's service, a sum of money from the time of the war in Gascony. He asks that this money might be paid to him, so that he can pay his father's debts, as Galhard Daudoins, his children, and others are hostages at Orthez and elsewhere for the payment of these debts.2) He states that at the king's command he surrendered himself up and remained for a long time at Montreuil, to his great cost and harm. He asks that the money paid to him by his father at that time might be paid, so that he might give satisfaction to his creditors and discharge his father's soul.3) He states that he and his father owe great debts at London because of the Scottish war, and have sworn and obliged themselves according to the statute. He asks the king and council to take such counsel that they might not be perjurors and that he might not be put in prison.
Nature of endorsement: He is to take his letters to John de Sandale and Thomas de Cauntebrigge, and they will let him have the king's letter for what is due to him; and furthermore he will have a writ of the great seal, by which the Seneschal and the Constable of Bordeaux will be ordered to let him have the office of gauger of Gabarret until his debt is paid: that is, as much as the king receives for the office. And if his debt is worth more than the office, he will have an assignment for the remainder in Gascony.
Places mentioned: Gascony, [France]; Orthez, [Gascony, France]; Mosterol sur Fordion (Montreuil) [unidentified], [France]; London; Scotland; Gabarret, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned: Arnold (Arnaut) de Gavastun (Gaveston, Gabaston), late knight of Gascony; Galhard (Gaillard) Daudoins (Audoins); John de Sandale; Thomas de Caunt[ebrigge] (Cambridge).
Note: Datable to 1305, with reference to Roles Gascons, vol. III, no.4723, which is dated 28 March 1305, and which is clearly in accordance with the endorsement.
Date: [1305]
