Description:
Petitioners: Arnaud Guilhem (Arnold William) de Marssan (Marsan).
Name(s): de Marssan (Marsan), Arnaud Guilhem (Arnold William)
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: The petitioner makes four requests:1) He asks that an enquiry be held into the boundaries between his lands and those of the king in St Sever and Bazas, as the king's people often enter his lands; 2) He states that the Lady of Labarte and Bernard de Poy have asked Fossat if they may build a new bastide in their territory, which adjoins the petitioner's lands. He therefore requests that, if the bastide is built, the inhabitants may not take or extend upon his own lands.3) He requests that an enquiry be held into his rights to the vicarage of Tarsac, from which he has been disturbed, and if it does, that he be allowed to hold it as his ancestors did previously.4) He states that, during the reign of the King's father, a dispute between the petitioner and his brother, Fortenarius, over the barony of Montgaillard, Louvigny, Hagetmau and Saint Loubouer, led to the lands being taken into the king's hands. These have now been restored to them, and an enquiry was ordered to be held into the issues levied from these places while they were in royal hands, so that they too could be restored. However, nothing has yet been done, and he therefore asks that the seneschal of Gascony be ordered to make restoration.
Nature of endorsement: [On face] 1) To the first three petitions, the seneschal of Gascony should be ordered to examine the matter and do what will be to the King's profit.2) The letters should be shown at the Chancery of England and they should be advised of the amount.[On dorse - three words illegible].
Places mentioned: Gascony, [France]; St Sever, [Gascony, France]; Bazas, [Guyenne, France]; Theurssan (Tarsac), [Gascony, France]; Ayderon (Aire-sur-l-Adour), [Gascony, France]; Lescun, [Gascony, France]; Montgaillard, [Gascony, France]; Louinher (Louvigny), Gascony, France]; Hagetmau, [Gascony, France]; Saint-Loubouer, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned: Lady of Labarte, late wife of Noth de Montoleu; Noth de Montoleu; Bernard de Poy; Amenieu del Fossat, lieutenant of the seneschal of Gascony; Fortener (Fortenarius), Lord of Lescun, brother of the petitioner.
Note: The handwriting, the references to the king's father, and other references in the Gascon rolls to the petitioner and his brother, would all suggest that this petition dates to the reign of Edward II.
Date: [c. 1307-c. 1327]
