Details of SC 8/23/1125
Reference: SC 8/23/1125
Description:
Petitioners: John Rypon (Ripon), Abbot of Fountains.
Name(s): Rypon (Ripon), John
Addressees: Commons of parliament.
Occupation: Abbot of Fountains
Nature of request: John Rypon states that, on Sunday 6 May last, as he was coming to the king to sue for restitution of various church ornaments and other goods, taken from the abbey by Roger Frank, who had lately intruded into the office of abbot, and his adherents, and to appear before the King's Bench in answer to a writ, Oliver Frank, Roger's brother, and Robert his kinsman, at the command of Roger and his brother Ralph, laid in wait for him at Welbeck Park, with more than forty armed men, in order to kill him, and wounded him and his servants with arrows. He asks the commons to ask the king to ordain a remedy in the present parliament, both for his salvation and that of his monks, servants and tenants, and for the return of the aforesaid goods.
Nature of endorsement: [On face] Soit baille au roy (It is to be delivered to the king).[On dorse] It seems to the king that the supplicant has sufficient remedy through the common law.
Places mentioned: Fountains, [West Riding of Yorkshire]; Welbeck Park, [Nottinghamshire]; Nottingham, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned: Roger Frank, monk of Fountains; Ralph [Frank], brother of Roger Frank; Oliver Frank, brother of Roger Frank; Robert Frank, kinsman of Roger Frank; George Swale, servant of John Rypon; Thomas Neuton (Newton), servant of John Rypon.
