Swansea Vale and Neath and Brecon Junction Railway Company, 1864-1869

Physical description: 3 file(s)
Administrative / biographical background:

The SVNB was incorporated by the Swansea Vale and Neath and Brecon Junction Railway Act 1864. This act also authorised the construction of a railway commencing by a junction with the Swansea Vale Railway at the north end of Ynys-y-Geinon Station and terminating by a junction with the Neath and Brecon Railway in the Hamlet of Colbren, Brec; the length of the proposed railway being 8 miles. A branch from a junction on the proposed line in the parish of Ystradgynlais, Brec, to a bridge carrying a tramway belonging to the Abercrave Colliery over the River Tawe 1.5 miles away in the same parish was authorised by the Swansea Vale and Neath and Brecon Junction Railway Act 1865.

The line between Ynys-y-Geinon and Colbren via Abercrave was opened in 10 Nov 1873 but it would appear that the branch was never constructed.

The Neath & Brecon Railway Company was empowered to lease the SVNB from 1 Jan 1867 by the Swansea Vale and Neath and Brecon Junction (Lease) Act 1866 but took over the SVNB under the powers of the Neath and Brecon Railway (Amalgamation and Arrangement) Act 1869. In turn, the Neath and Brecon was absorbed in the Great Western Railway Company in 1922.
