Administrative / biographical background:

Born at Galhampton and educated at Sherborne School, John Melliar (1757-1840) took an active role in local society, acting as Treasurer to the Sherborne Branch Bible Society and the Green Girls' Society, as well as Chairman of the Sherborne Savings Bank and the Sherborne Mendicity Society. He was an important benefactor to the town, leaving a number of bequests to various individuals and public institutions on his death. One bequest was to establish a parochial charity in Sherborne, to be administered by trustees; the resultant collection of correspondence and financial papers was eventually left in the care of the former Sherborne Urban District Council, who gifted the papers to Sherborne Museum in 1974.
