Date: 1859-1870
History: The Corps originated in a Royal Warrant of 28 Oct 1858, which authorized a number of men to be detached from their regiments and to be employed permanently with, and placed under the command of officers of the Commissariat Department. Such men were to be clerks, butchers or bakers, and they were to be retained as supernumeraries on the strength of their respective corps. A Royal Warrant of 24 Sept 1859 approved of the men so employed being formed into Commissariat Staff Corps. Prior to Oct 1861 these men were shown on the strength of their respective regiments. On 1 Oct 1861, the Commissariat Staff Corps was first shown as a distinct corps in the returns of the Adjutant General’s Office. On 1 April 1870 the Commissariat Staff Corps was merged in the Army Service Corps.
