Date: 1869-2003
History: Established by Royal Warrant of 2 April 1869, to investigate and make available to the public, manuscript sources for British history. The HMC became the UK's central advisory body on archives and manuscripts relating to British history and the principal source of information for researchers on the nature and location of particular records. Responsible for maintaining the National Register of Archives (NRA), the ARCHON directory and portal, giving direct links to record repositories and archival research projects in progress, and the Manorial Documents Register. HMC also offers advice to owners, custodians and users of non-public records, as well as to central and local government and grant-awarding bodies. In April 2003, the HMC combined with the Public Record Office (PRO) to become The National Archives.
