History: | Government department and executive agency reporting to the Lord Chancellor, formed in April 2003 by bringing together the Public Record Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC) to become The National Archives (TNA) at Kew, Surrey. The National Archives for England, Wales and the United Kingdom acts as the custodian of the nation's collective memory as revealed in the records of government. It also collects and disseminates information about archives relating to British history wherever they are held, and administers the UK's public records system under the Public Records acts of 1958 and 1967 by supervising of the selection of government and legal records for permanent preservation, and for safeguarding them and making them publicly available. From October 2006, TNA also included the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) within its structure. |
