History: | Robert Catesby was the originator and mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot. He came from a prominent Roman Catholic family, and had taken part in the Earl of Essex's doomed rebellion in 1601. He had great charisma and a persuasive personality; having confided in Thomas Winter and John Wright, then Percy and Fawkes, he drew in others. When the Plot failed, he escaped with others to Holbeach House, Staffordshire, where he was cornered and mortally shot on 8 November. His severed head was displayed on London Bridge. |
