History: A Rural Sanitary Authority was established for the parishes of Ampthill, Clophill, Cranfield, Flitton, Flitwick, Haynes, Higham Gobion, Houghton Conquest, Lidlington, Lower Gravenhurst, Marston Moretaine, Maulden, Millbrook, Pulloxhill, Shillington, Silsoe, Steppingley, Upper Gravenhurst, and Westoning in 1875, and became a Rural District Council in 1894. Upper and Lower Gravenhurst parishes were merged to form Gravenhurst in 1888, and the parish of Ampthill became a separate Urban Sanitary District in 1893. The parishes of Aspley Guise, Aspley Heath, Battlesden, Eversholt, Harlington, Holcot alias Hulcote, Husborne Crawley, Milton Bryan, Potsgrove, Ridgmont, Salford, Tingrith, Toddington and Woburn were added to the Rural District in 1900, on the abolition of Woburn Rural District. Hulcote and Salford parishes were merged in 1933 to form Hulcote & Salford. Toddington parish was moved to Luton Rural District in 1933. In 1974 the whole area of the Rural District became part of Mid Bedfordshire District.
