Historic Environment Scotland (HES) was established in 2015, and the HES Archive brings together items that were previously held by Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). HES has been identifying, surveying and interpreting the built environment in Scotland for over a hundred years. Their archive provides unique insights into Scotland's places, documenting how the national archaeological, industrial and architectural environment has changed over time. They hold more than 5 million items that help form the National Record of the Historic Environment, including photographs, maps, drawings and documents. This material can be viewed in our public search room or accessed online through Canmore, their searchable database. HES also looks after Scotland's National Collection of Aerial Photography, which contains over 26 million images from locations around the world
