Description:

Harrison v. Mayor etc. of Southampton: Henry Robinson Hartley disinherited his only daughter, giving the bulk of his considerable estate to the City of Southampton for the purpose of establishing a Museum and Botanical Gardens. His daughter disputed the will, maintaining that as the deceased resided in France the matter should be settled according to French law, under which she would receive half of the estate. Mr. Hartley left a long and interesting diary, extracts from which were read at the trial and included, inter alia, the insurrection at Paris in 1848 and a great outbreak of cholera at Southampton
