Reference: SC 8/222/11083
Description:
Petitioners: Arnauton de Campaigne, esquire to Bertrucat de Lebret.
Name(s): de Campaigne, Arnauton
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: [This petition is damaged and illegible in places.]Arnauton de Campaigne requests that he be granted the provostry of La Reole, currently in the hands of the French, in consideration of the long service given to the king, his father and his grandfather in their wars by him and his father.
Nature of endorsement: [on face] The king has granted this bill with the advice of the [...].Burley.[on dorse] The council agree that the petitioner should have the provostry for life for the reasons given.
Places mentioned: La Reole, [Guyenne, France]; France.
People mentioned: Bertrucat de Lebret, knight; [Edward III], King of England; [Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales]; [Simon] Burley.
Note: Date on the guard to c. 1377-86, but no evidence cited. However it clearly dates to the reign of Richard II, and the appearance of Burley's signature clearly dates it to before his trial and execution in 1388. The endorsement is similar to those found on others in this file from c. 1383 (e.g. SC 8/222/11088).
