Description:

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Carnatic (master [Hubert] Le Loup de Beaulieu).

History: a French East Indiaman (700 tons, 16 guns, 97 men), bound from Mauritius, Pondicherry, Madras, Marzulipatnam, Bengal, Janon and finally Loango on the African coast to Lorient, laden with various merchandizes including red wood, rattan, cotton wool, saltpetre, pepper, cinnamon, Hyson tea, betilles [muslin], silk and other textiles, tobacco; taken on 28 October 1778 in latitude 38°N, longitude 26°W by the privateer Mentor (John Dawson commanding), and brought first into the Downs and then into Deal.
