Details of SC 8/344/E1310
Reference: SC 8/344/E1310
Description:
Petitioners: John Colcyll, knight; Elizabeth Colcyll, wife of John Colcyll; Robert Wilughby (Willoughby), knight; Thomas Stranguysh, esquire; Eleanor Stranguysh, wife of Thomas Stranguysh.
Name(s): Colcyll; Colcyll; Wilughby (Willoughby); Stranguysh; Stranguysh, John; Elizabeth; Robert; Thomas; Eleanor
Addressees: Council of the prince.
Nature of request: The petitioners show and complain that they were lately seised of the manors of Bedcote, Stourbridge and Belbroughton until Stafford disseised them by force and great might, and keeps them against law and reason, and they dare not attempt anything because of Stafford's power and might. They request that the prince's commandment be directed to Stafford commanding him to appear before the council to show how and by what title he retains the manors, and they request such direction between the parties in accordance with the law.
Nature of endorsement: [None].
Places mentioned: Betcote (Bedcote), Worcestershire; Stourbridge, Worcestershire; Belbroughton, Worcestershire.
People mentioned: [Edward Plantagenet], prince [of Wales]; Humphrey Stafford, esquire.
Note: The petition is dated to 1471-1483 on the basis that a cover note preceding this file of petitions indicates that the petitions SC 8/344/E1262-E1316B mostly date to the period 1481-1483, and nearly all appear to belong to the period 1471-1483, this latter date being the dates that Edward Plantagenet, Edward IV's eldest son, held the principality of Wales and the county of Chester. Throughout this file, the latter date range has been adopted where no evidence survives to indicate more specific dates.
