Description:
Petitioners: Richard Bechewater; Ellen Bechewater, wife of Richard Bechewater.
Name(s): Bechewater; Bechewater, Richard; Ellen
Addressees: Prince.
Nature of request: The Bechewaters show that they have been grievously and unjustly vexed by the subtle and untrue means of Bissett and others who were lately the feoffees of Richard Edmond in certain lands and tenements in King's Norton and Solihull that lately were John Edmond's, Ellen Bechewater having been found kinsman and heir of this same John, he having died seised of the same. Notwithstanding this, the feoffees have requested this to be examined, and when this was seen to be failing they went to the common law, and subsequently tried to sell the lands, and eventually forged a deed on entail in favour of Gower. Gower entered and disseised the petitioners, but they recovered by an assize, but the feoffees still pursue the matter. The Bechewaters request that, the premises graciously considered, that they can be licenced to sue their action at the common law thereby to be determined and ended as right requires.
Nature of endorsement: 29 August, in the 21st year of [Edward] IV.The lord wills that John Higford and the Recorder of Coventry call the parties before them and examine the matter and set them at such an end as shall be thought most according to right and good custom.[Signed]: R. Grey.
Places mentioned: King's Norton, [Leicestershire]; Solihull, [Warwickshire]; Worcester, [Worcestershire].
People mentioned: John Bissett of King's Norton, an executor of Richard Edmond; John Edmond, brother of Richard Edmond; Richard Edmond; Thomas Litelton (Littleton); Thomas Brigges (Bridges); John Huggeford (Higford), esquire; John Gower; Recorder of Coventry; R. Grey.
Note: The petition is dated to 1481 because it is dated in the dating clause of the response to 29 August in the 21st year of E[Edward] IV.
