Description:

Folios 170-181. Letter from W Sculthorpe, Clerk to Nottinghamshire Magistrates, to Lord John Russell, [Home Secretary], requesting advice on powers available to the magistrates to prevent a proposed Chartist meeting. Includes enclosure of: (i) Notice from Nottinghamshire Magistrates, warning against unlawful meetings, with reproduced open letter from John Russell, to Magistrates of Nottinghamshire, outlining powers to prevent and disperse unlawful meetings, as issued in a proclamation from the Queen, printed by J Hinklin, Nottingham. (ii) 2 copies of printed handbill from the Nottinghamshire Magistrates, warning against unlawful assemblies, signed W Sculthorpe, Clerk to the Magistrates, printed by Hinklin. (iii) Handbill entitled, 'Nottingham Whitsun Demonstration', publicising Chartist meeting to be held on the Forest, signed Elijah Bradley, printed by R Sutton, Nottingham.
