Letter from the Duke of Portland, Welbeck Abbey, [Nottinghamshire], to Lord John Russell, [Home Secretary], stating that he has requested a police inspector and four of his men to remain in Mansfield and that the army pensioners cannot be relied upon. Includes enclosure of resolutions adopted at a meeting of magistrates held in the Town Hall, Mansfield, 14 May 1839, requesting that the Duke of Portland apply for Inspector Martin and four of his men to remain for the purpose of drilling the association formed to protect property, signed George Walkden, Chairman. |
