Details of SC 8/286/14282
Reference: SC 8/286/14282
Description:
Petitioners: Mayor, jurats, hundred peers and community of Bayonne.
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: The Mayor, jurats, hundred peers and community of Bayonne make three requests:1) They state that the good estate and safekeeping of Bayonne depend on the safe-keeping of its port, and that this could be put in jeopardy by a royal bailiwick called Labenne and by the place called Capbreton which pertains to it. They ask that this bailiwick with its appurtenances might be annexed and granted to the city in perpetuity, as it is not worth more than £16 sterling annually, and almost all the inheritances in Capbreton and the vineyards in the bailiwick are held by citizens of Bayonne.2) They ask that they might be released from the tax of three pence in the pound in the king's realm, as the people of the realm of Castile and others are quit of it.3) They ask that they might be quit of a tax on their ships.
Nature of endorsement: These things are to be granted at the king's pleasure, according to their good behaviour.
Places mentioned: Bayonne, [Gascony, France]; Labenne, [Gascony, France]; Capbreton, [Gascony, France]; Castile, [Spain].
Note: These petitions are granted on 20 November 10 Edward III (1336), (m. 1 of C 61/48 and Carte, vol. I p.83). The earlier dealings with Labenne and Capbreton calendared in Carte, vol. I p.73 (m.11 of C 61/42) are dated 1 and 2 April 4 Edward III (1330) and those on p.75-76 (m.18 of C 61/43), are dated 13 February 5 Edward III (1331).
