Description:
Petitioners: Merchants of Bayonne.

Nature of request: The merchants of Bayonne state that Michael Menyot, the king's butler, took 109 tuns and 3 pipes of wine from them last Lent for the king's use, and that various writs of Chancery were sent to him to pay them, but he refused, in contempt of the king and council and to their great harm; and he insulted them when they demanded payment. They request swift payment, so that they do not have to complain to the king, and so that they can serve the king with their ships and other goods, as if they are not paid, the merchants of Bayonne will cease to bring their merchandise to England.

This petition suggests that Menyot is the current butler, and thus would seem to date from between these dates. Check m.12 of C 61/49.
