Description:
Petitioners: Proctors of Saint-Sever.
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: The proctors of Saint-Sever state that they are owed £3000 sterling and more for victuals and other things delivered to the king's ministers when the town was besieged by the French, and that they had an assignment for this from half the custom of Southampton, together with the people of other towns of Gascony, which assignment was confirmed by letters of the king's father. This custom is received by Raymond Arnold de Montauger, and the people of Saint-Sever have received nothing for fifteen years and more, and are still owed £2000. They ask that Raymond Ernald might be constrained to render a good account and make a good payment to them from their share of what he has received from the custom, and that the custom might be assigned to them in full until they are paid all that they are owed; so that they can maintain their estate and better serve the king, and especially make purveyance of corn, wine and victuals to save their town for the king, as it is on the frontier with his enemies.
Nature of endorsement: They are to have writs to the Mayor and sheriffs of London, and to the Mayor and bailiffs of Southampton and Ipswich, and to the other sheriffs and bailiffs in whose districts the said Raymond Arnold de Montauger might be found, to have the body of the said Raymond at the Exchequer at York at the quinzaine of Trinity next, to account, in the presence of the proctors of Saint-Sever, for what he has received from the said custom and delivered to the people of the said town. And they are also to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons to inform the king, after the account, of what they have found, so that the king can ordain what is to be done for the profit of the said town by good counsel. And if the said Raymond is in default or in arrears in his account towards the people of the said town, he is to remain there until the king has done his will.
