Note: | Inquisition and return: Date to be returned: 25/06/1512 [over an erasure]. Attached is the inquisition made at Southwark on 18/06/1512 before Roger Lewknor, Sheriff. On the day of the recognisance Thomas Pomeroy, clerk, Richard Rawlyn, Bartholomew Harward, citizens and grocers of London, Robert Racheford, John Hardman, John Hunt, and Thomas Gylmyn, were seised in demesne of the Manor of Mase in Southwark, and of two water-mills, 46 messuages, and 2 gardens in Southwark, called King Tenement; and by a separate charter, dated 08/08/1471, they enfeoffed Roger Copley, citizen and mercer of London, Thomas Urswick, Chief Baron of the Exchequer, Richard Luke, clerk, William Copley, Oliver Copley, Thomas Copley, Edward Goldesburgh, Thomas Massingberd, and William Purchas with the above-mentioned property, to the use of Roger Copley, and his heirs. At Southwark on 16/05/1482 Roger Copley declared as his last wish, that the manor should belong to Anne his wife for the rest of her life and should pass after her decease to her heirs; the two mills should pass to his heir Robert Copley, and then to his heirs; the messuages and gardens, called King Tenement, should pass after Roger's death to Richard Copley and his heirs. Roger Copley afterwards died, and of his feoffees only William Purchase survived. He made a charter dated 16/02/1502, enfeoffing Richard Carewe, knight, John Devonish {Devenysshe}, and ... Yaxley, servants at law of John Fortescue {Fortescu}, esquire, John Haydon, esquire, Edmund Dudley, esquire, William Brocas, esquire, and Richard Broke, with the manor and its appurtenances, to the use of the beneficiaries of the last intentions of Roger Copley. |
