The European Division was formed in 1972. In 1973 it became a component of the Local Government and Housing Group. From 1975 it became part of the Economic Planning Group. The Economic and Regional Policy Division 2, Branch A, superseded it in 1983.

The functions of the Division concerned general co-ordination of matters concerning the European Communities as applied to Wales, including: status of areas; policy on mid-Wales; liaison with the Development Corporation for Wales; Regional Development Fund Policy related to assisted area status and rural Wales; and liaison with the Development Board for Rural Wales and the Wales Tourist Board.
