Description:
Petitioners: Proctor of the merchants of Bearn.
Addressees: King and Council.
Occupation: Proctor of the merchants of Bearn
Nature of request: The proctor of the merchants of Bearn states that he has been in England for nine years attempting to recover money owed to them by the king, and although four years ago they were assigned the profits of wardships and marriages in payment of the debt, and more than 20,000 marks has been raised, none has been paid to him. He was told at the council meeting at Lanercost to go to London, where he would be given his wages and the outstanding sums, but nothing has been done. He therefore asks that he be paid the sums granted, and the rest of his wages for the last three years, or that he be given a loan so that he can pay off the debts he has incurred while awaiting payment.
Nature of endorsement: John de Sandal was instructed by the king's council at Carlisle in his parliament to account with the merchants or their attorney, who should deliver all letters issued to them by the Earl of Lincoln or other lieutenants in Gascony, and to ensure they are paid by Frescobaldi and his fellows. And let the Treasurer and barons of the Exchequer make allocation on their accounts of the money paid to the merchants. And issue letters patent to Peter de la Posterle, the attorney of the merchants, of the said assignments.
Places mentioned: Bearn, [Gascony, France]; Lanercost, [Cumberland]; London; Carlisle, [Cumberland]; Gascony, [France].
People mentioned: John de Sandal; [Henry de Lacy], Earl of Lincoln; Emeric de Frescobaldi; Peter de la Posterle, attorney.
Note: An order for these sums to be paid was issued at Carlisle on 20 March 1307.
Date: [1307]
