The files deal mainly with the role of the Home Office in conjunction with other government departments in the enforcement of summer time as fixed by the Summer Time Acts 1922, 1925 and 1947; and with the drafting of the Summer Time Order 1964 and proposals to make the changes permanent..

Initially E1 Division of the Home Office was responsible for and contributed to these files; responsibility was later passed to A1 Division.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Summer Time Act 1947 was passed during a serious fuel crisis and set a statutory summertime period.

In 1964 the Summer Time Order was passed to provide for an extension of the summertime period by four weeks in the spring and three weeks in the autumn. The Order remained in operation until the end of 1967.
