Covering letter (ff 29 and 45) from Edwin Chadwick, Poor Law Commission Office, to Fox Maule, Home Office, enclosing: instructions to Inigo Thomas, magistrate in Eastbourne on implementing the Poor Law Amendment Act clauses about relief and surplus labour. Comments on 'mixing up wages with relief' and should 'restore to the labouring classes comfort and good order and to the owners of property a security for what they possess', 29 April 1835; copy of report from W H T Hawley, assistant commissioner, on preparations Eastbourne guardians have made against an assembly of labourers from Alfriston, [Sussex]. They are ready to use troops, special constables, the coastal blockade service and Metropolitan Police officers, 1 May 1835.
