Description:

The ALO series originated in 1961 to accommodate the general establishment matters of the Aliens Department. The ALO series changed to IMO after the Aliens Department became known as the Immigration and Nationality Department in 1962.

The files selected include guidance notes for departmental officers on processing casework, staff training and the organisation of parts of the immigration system and its paperwork.

The file references consist of two numbers only, plus an overyear which is supposed to indicate the year in which the file is opened, but which was misused and means very little - in the listing this appears as a bracketed number at the end of each file reference - "135/23(61)" indicates the file was originally reference IMO/61 135/23.
