John Clevland. Receipt of letter that at the visitation of Portsmouth Yard it was recorded that the bleaching of English canvas impaired its strength and we were to investigate the method of bleaching and its effects. We agree that bleaching canvas is prejudicial and impairs its strength. It is not allowed and there is a clause in the contract for canvas whereby the Contractor is obliged to clean the yarn with potash and not use lime. Describes the whole process for manufacturing canvas |
