The Third London Airport Directorate was established in the Department of the Environment in 1971, replacing the earlier PF3 Planning Branch. In 1970, PF3 had itself replaced P3 Division of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, which in 1968 had taken over this aspect of the work of that department's P2 Division, where responsibility had lain for the preceding ten years.

The directorate was largely concerned with planning for the proposed Stansted Airport in Essex, although some files deal with rival sites in Essex at Foulness and Maplin Islands. It appears to have been wound up in 1974.
