Reference: SC 8/21/1047
Description:
Petitioners: William Leygrave (Legrave) of Bristol.
Name(s): Leygrave (Legrave), William
Addressees: King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request: William Leygrave states that he recovered a messuage and six shops in Bristol by an assize of fresh force against Hugh Carleton and Edith his wife, and John Carleton and Maud his wife, before Simon Oliver, Recorder of Bristol, who, by collusion, later aided Hugh, Edith, John and Maud to sue a writ of error, overturning his own judgment. He requests that the king order Simon to appear before him, to be examined concerning this, and that he further provide a remedy.
Nature of endorsement: [None].
Places mentioned: Bristuyt (Bristol), [Gloucestershire].
People mentioned: Mayor and bailiffs of Bristol; Hugh Carleton; Edith [Carleton]; John Carleton; Maud [Carleton]; Simon Oliver, Recorder of Bristol; Thomas Knap, Mayor of Bristol.
Note: SC 8/21/1048 is enrolled on the roll of the parliament held at Westminster at the Quinzaine of St Hilary, 17 Richard II (1394) (Rot. Parl. vol. III, pp.314b-315a). This petition seems to be from about the same stage in the proceedings - indeed, it seems to be an alternative version, blaming a particular named judge.
