Reference: SC 8/21/1034
Description:
Petitioners: Chancellor, wardens, provosts, masters, and scholars of Oxford University.
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: The chancellor, wardens, provosts, masters, and scholars of Oxford University state that the collectors of the tenth in Oxford are distraining them to pay a tenth for their rents in the town, although their tenants are assessed and pay their share on their moveable goods; and request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement: [None].
Places mentioned: Oxford, [Oxfordshire].
People mentioned: Collectors of the tenth in Oxford.
Note: Rot. Parl. vol. III p.276a-b (no. 11) dates this petition to the parliament of January 1390, but the dating of many of the petitions ascribed by them to particular years of Richard II is not very secure. A note on the guard reads '? 1390' with no further explanation given, and a note on the dorse, which is however not contemporary with the petition, reads '13 Ric 2' (ie. 1389-90). A note on the guard of the duplicate, SC 8/21/1035, however, reads '? 1391 or 1390'.
