Details of SC 8/16/781
Reference: SC 8/16/781
Description:
Petitioners: Burgesses of Scarborough.
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: The burgesses of Scarborough state that King Edward, the king's father, in the first year of his reign, ordered the bailiffs of Scarborough to stock and equip the castle there with provisions and other necessities, from the farm of the town, by the view and testimony of John Sampson, then Constable of the castle, and that their expenses would be allowed in their farm at their next account; and that, on the constable's orders, they spent 4 li. 5 s. 8 d. on archers and crossbowmen, as can be seen from an indenture made between the bailiffs and constable. But because the constable is dead, and has not pledged that the indenture is of his making, the Barons of the Exchequer will not allow them this money. They request a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow them the sum in their farm, notwithstanding the aforesaid reason.
Nature of endorsement: They are to have writs to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that, if they can establish that the indenture was made by the said constable, and that they show such expenses, at the king's command, as are contained within, then they are to give them an allowance in the manner contained within, notwithstanding the said reason.
Places mentioned: Scarborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned: Bailiffs of Scarborough; John Sampson, Constable of Scarborough castle; Edward [II], King of England; Barons of the Exchequer.
Note: No positive identification, but assumed to date from the early part of Edward III's reign.
