Administrative / biographical background:

The Planning Division E was the creation of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government during the 1960s, but the prefix PE was not used until late 1970. Following the Department of the Environment's creation branches of the Division changed from being denoted by a number to being denoted by a letter. Following the reorganisation the Division comprised four branches PE1, PE2, PE3 and PE4. The functions of the branches were as follows:

PE1: Planning for Northern and West Midlands regions.

PE2: Planning for North West and East Midlands regions.

PE3: Planning appeal decisions for North West, East Midlands, West Midlands regions. Enforcement appeal decisions.

PE4: Planning Training Unit.

The Division was not affected by the Planning Divisions' reorganisation of 1971. Following the reorganisation of 1972 the Planning Division E and its branches were abolished and the functions split between Planning Land Use Policy Directorate, Northern, West Midlands, North West, East Midlands and South West Regional Offices and Personnel, Manpower and Training Directorate.
